Razer’s cloud gaming handheld starts at $400 for the WiFi-only model

Razer, you may recall, Recently teasedA 5G handheld device designed for cloud gaming. The company took the opportunity at RazerCon to formally announce the system, which it calls the Razer Edge — yep, RazerFinally, it was there with its branding.

The Edge’s 6.8-inch AMOLED display has a refresh rate at 144Hz and Full HD+ resolution at 2,400 x 1,080. Razer claims the display has 87 percent more pixels than competitors’ devices. The Steam Deck’sFor example, the screen has a resolution of 1,280×800. Edge’s Gorilla glass touchscreen has a 288Hz sampling speed, which should make it responsive.

This device was developed by Razer in collaboration with Qualcomm and Verizon. It runs on Android Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming PlatformThis was created exclusively for Edge. The Edge features an Adreno GPU and a Kryo 3Ghz octa core Kryo CPU, as well as active cooling and six vents. Razer claims that early benchmarking has shown that the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 can deliver speeds up to three times higher than other mobile platforms such as the Snapdragon 720G.

The battery has a capacity of 5,000mAh and the device also features 8GB LPDDR5 RAM (8GB) and 128GB of storage. The audio features include two-way speakers that support Verizon Adaptive Sound, and a pair each of digital microphones. There’s a webcam too — you’ll have the option to livestream your gameplay.

The Edge is composed of an Android 12 tablet and a Razer Kishi V2 Pro controller. The analog triggers are the same as those found in the former. Kishi V2Razer claims that the D-pad is “ultra-precise”, with microswitches and programmable buttons. HyperSense haptic feedback is a feature that makes the Kishi V2 Pro stand out. It also has a 3.5mm headphone socket. Together, the tablet/controller weighs 400.8g, which is slightly less than a pound.

The Edge will be available only in the US, but will include launchers for Epic Games and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Remote play services like Steam Link, Moonlight, and Parsec will also be available.

Connectivity is essential as this device is cloud-focused. Razer claims the Edge features WiFi 6E which runs on a “uncongested 6GHz channel”. It also has multi-gig bandwidth support, which allows for fast downloads and uploads. As long as the model is correct, 5G will allow you to connect to cloud gaming services while on the move.

Verizon is the only company to offer the 5G version Razer Edge. It will be available in January around the same time that the WiFi model. Pricing and availability details will be confirmed later. This version will retail for $400, and can be purchased at RazerStore and online. It’s not a small price to pay for the WiFi model. The 5G version is likely to be more expensive, but the specifications seem good for the money. If you prefer not to carry a Steam Deck and your phone into a controller, this is an option worth looking at for cloud gaming on the go.

The Razer Edge is not the only handheld device that focuses on cloud gaming. Logitech’s $350 Cloud Gaming Handheld from Logitech doesn’t support WiFi 6 or 6E. Available next week. Cloud gaming is another area of focus for notable manufacturers. Google this week Acer, ASUS (and Lenovo) announced three ChromebooksThese are intended for streaming games.

They also support Bluetooth 5.2, 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.2, and Bluetooth 2.3GHz connectivity (via a USB C dongle that you can plug into your console, or any other device). Razer claims that you can get up to 30 hours battery life when you include top-ups from your charging case. Hammerhead HyperSpeed is available as a PlayStation- or Xbox-braded model. The $150 earbuds will be made available in November.
