Ralf Rangnick revealed six names from his shortlist that he wanted to sign for Manchester United. However, the club rejected it.
Rangnick, who took over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s role in the middle of the season, oversaw a disastrous spell at Old Trafford as interim manager.
The club finished with its lowest Premier League point total ever.
He was going to leave Old Trafford at the end of his tenure to give the club more time to find a new manager.
Rangnick had originally intended to be an upstairs member of the club. But he decided to quit and is now the Austrian national team manager.
Erik ten Hag was appointed as the summer transfer market manager. Rangnick, however, has stated that he did not enjoy the same luxury.
“There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club,” Rangnick said, speaking to German outlet BILD.
“But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.
“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those names were realistic.
“We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market.
“But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”
Chelsea and Nkunku have been linked to moves by Gvardiol, and they could be signed as soon as January.
Diaz chose Liverpool while Vlahovic chose Juventus, despite being offered by Arsenal.
Haaland has, naturally, signed for Man City. He is currently dominating the Premier League with 17 goals scored in 11 Premier League matches.
