Neil-Smith is from Surrey in England. He also stated, “We have been richly fortunate to have had a monarch, the late Queen Elizabeth, who has participated in both the Church of England’s life and in expounding The teachings of Jesus ChristThey are often referred to by her in her annual Christmas broadcasts.”

‘Christian belief meant a lot to the queen’

The passing of the queen is “the end of an era, a major shift,” Professor Murray Pittock, a Scottish historian and Bradley Professor of Literature at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland, told Fox News Digital in a recent phone interview.

He stated that the Queen had lived a long, fulfilling life.

He said, “She had an overriding, overwhelming sense of duty at all costs, something that isn’t very common nowadays.”

QUEEN ELIZABETH II’S TIARAS and THE SPARKLING STREAKS BEHIND THEM

Pittock stated that “Christian belief meant much to the queen.”

“And it seems that it also means quite a lot for King Charles.”

Neil-Smith stated that in 1977, her Silver Jubilee included “Her Late Majesty visiting Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral.”

“This was an English monarch’s first visit to a Roman Catholic cathedral since before the Reformation.”

He added, “Her Late Majesty met Pope John XXIII, Rome, in 1961.” She was also greeted by Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II during their visits to England in 1982 and 2010.

He stated, “By these highly symbolic actions, Her Majesty played a part in healing the historic split between the Church of England & the Roman Catholic Church.”

“[The Queen]possessed an overriding sense that duty was required at all costs. This is not something you see very often nowadays.

Neil-Smith stated, “The new king is also well known for taking his faith seriously. And we pray that he’ll be strengthened as he fulfills his new role.”

‘Creation of the English monarchy’

Pittock stated that the Church of England was “a creation of England’s monarchy” because of “the demand that bishops of the Catholic Church in England respect the royal supremacy.”

Pittock noted that Henry VIII was the first to create this system. He wanted to “basically divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn.”

(His marriage with Catherine was annulled.

“There is a struggle, and then the king becomes head of the Church of England — which is really the idea that the monarch is supreme over the Pope when it comes to church appointments and church governance,” Pittock explained.

“And in1558, when Elizabeth [Queen Elizabeth I]She is crowned the Supreme Governor. He continued, “This is the title the Crown still holds in regard to the Church of England.”

“Rather fascinatingly, King Charles is also an associate of the Church of Scotland, while in Scotland, just like the queen.”

As the Supreme Governor, the monarch “formally appoints high-ranking members of the church on the advice of the prime minister of the United Kingdom,” who is, in turn, “advised by church leaders, such as the Lords Spiritual,” History.com notes.

“It’s a role that doesn’t altogether make sense — a detached role,” said Pittock.

It means that the Crown nominees for the office of bishops are actually parliamentary legislators. They are now signed off by the parliamentary executive, and the monarch.

Neil Smith explained the crowning and ordination of monarchs in relation to the church.

“English monarchs have been crowned in a church service over which an English bishop — normally the Archbishop of Canterbury — has presided since [King] Edgar’s coronation in 973,” he said.

He said, “This deeply religious service, which has many similarities to an ordination of priests or bishops, the monarch is both crown and anointed.” Prayers are offered to the Holy Spirit for the sanctification of the monarch as part of the anointing ceremony.

“The new King is known for taking his faith seriously. We pray that he will feel strengthened as he fulfills his new role.”

The church’s bishops play a lawmaking role in Britain, according to History.com.

Pittock added, “Quite interestingly, King Charles was also a member of Church of Scotland while in Scotland. As was the queen.”

He said, “They are both Anglicans as well as Presbyterians in Scotland.”

“Interestingly, the American Episcopal Church, which is, of course, part of the Anglican Communion, was actually founded not by the Church of England but by the Episcopal Church in Scotland — because that church didn’t at that point [in history]Recognize the monarchy,” he stated.
