Qatar’s World Cup debut fails as Ecuador’s Enner Valenzuela shines in the opening match win

Qatar’s World Cup debutThe match ended in disappointment for Ecuador after the team lost 2-0 to Ecuador. This was Ecuador’s first loss as a host. 

The dramatic pairing began with a lopsided match in front of more than 67,000 people. star striker Enner ValenciaJust three minutes into the match, a goal was scored. An offside call would however overturn that goal.

Valencia came back just minutes later to reinforce Ecuador’s early lead. He scored at the 16thminute after Valencia was given a penalty kick for a yellow card. Qatar’s goalkeeper Saad AlsheebFor tripping.

He would score his second goal of the game, and fifth consecutive World Cup goal, at the 33rd minute, ultimately sealing Qatar’s unfortunate fate.

The host nation had few chances, none as threatening as Ecuador’s, with five shots on goal and just 47% possession. Qatar drew four yellow cards – three before halftime – and 15 fouls.

As the first half was drawing to a close, shouts from large sections of yellow-clad Ecuadorian fans broke out in support: “We want beer!”

Next, Qatar will face Senegal on Friday. They hope to avoid another disaster in becoming the only country, other than South Africa, that fails to make it out of the group stage.
