Prince Harry will wear his military uniform to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. Here’s a look at his military background

Prince HarryHis brother Prince William had a distinguished military career during his early years and at the heights in Afghanistan. He rose to the rank as a captain and flew Apache attack helicopters for the Royal Air Force. The Duke of Sussex still supports wounded soldiers and their families by working with veteran charities.

Harry began a 44-week course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in May 2005 to become an Officer Cadet. This training combined academic endurance with extensive physical training. The training was completed by April 2006. Harry would then join a cavalry regiment in the British Army, known as the Blues and Royals. Queen Elizabeth IIPrince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Harry were both present at the Sovereign’s Parade at Sandhurst.

After spending two years in the Blues and Royals, he began training to be an Army Air Corps Pilot in January 2009. He was then selected to learn to fly the Apache Attack helicopter. 

What was the length of Prince Harry’s service in Afghanistan? 

Prince Harry has served in two deployments to Afghanistan throughout his military career. The first was a ten-week deployment in Helmand Province, where he served as a Forward air controller from 2007-2008. The second deployment, which was 20 weeks long, was the second of two for the duke. He served as an Apache Pilot from 2012 to 2013. The prince reached the rank captain at this point and was placed in 662 Squadron 3 Regiment in 16 Air Assault Brigade.

According to the website of the royal family, “Captain Harry Wales, as he was called in the Military, visited the United States of America to complete the final elements of Apache Conversion to Role where he learned to fly the aircraft and its weapons systems under a variety of challenging operational situations.” 

Harry was deployed to Afghanistan for 30 weeks with the British military, and served 10 years in the Army as a whole. 

Did he fight on front lines? 

Harry was in Afghanistan during the height of the battle against the Taliban, which was taking place on both the American and British side following September 11th attacks. 

Harry was deployed in September 2012 and was serving as an Apache helicopter pilot, Camp Bastion, in the Helmand Province. He was part of the Joint Aviation Group, which provided air support for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghan military forces. 

The Taliban placed a price upon Harry during his time in Afghanistan. Therefore, the military high commander had to order Harry to be moved from his post to a safe place during some parts of his tour.
