Premier League squads assessed: Who’s in, who’s out and homegrown quotas

Premier League clubs have submitted squad lists for the first half of the 2022-23 season — and after a summer transfer window spent bolstering their ranks, there’s not enough space for everyone.

After each window closes, clubs are required to submit 25-man squad list. There are also rules regarding homegrown players being included in selections.

Each squad can contain no more than 17 players who do not fulfil “homegrown” criteria. The Premier League says a “homegrown player” is one who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association in England or Wales “for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).”

The Premier League rules mirror European competitions like the Champions League. For the Champions League, a 25-man squad must have at least eight spots for a local (homegrown) player.

UEFA however categorizes a locally trained player into one of two types, a club-trained and an association-trained. A club-trained player is someone who was on a club’s books for three years between the ages of 15 and 21, while association-trained players are players who were on another club’s books in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. A club cannot have more than four players who are association-trained among the eight nominees for List A. A club that also reaches the knockout stages of any UEFA competition can register up to three additional players by February 2, at 11:59 GMT.

Clubs can include players younger than 21 years old, provided they do not exceed the 25-man squad limit.

Many players with long-term injuries were included, but what about those who didn’t make it? They must either sit tight, seek a move to a league whose window remains open — PortugalAnyone? — wait until January, or agree a mutual termination to move as a free agent.

Here, The Athletic’s writers assess each Premier League squad…

Squad verdict

There are not too many surprises with Arsenal’s Premier League squad list, although where they have placed some players is interesting.

William Saliba, Bukayo SakaAnd Gabriel MartinelliAs has been the case in previous seasons, they were all included among the under-21 players.

Arsenal

Saka is listed as an under-21 player for Arsenal (Photo: James Williamson – AMA/Getty Images)

This is especially advantageous for Martinelli and Saliba. Both players being registered at Arsenal for three years (since joining in 2019) while under the age of 21 means they can be registered as homegrown once they turn 22 — in March and June next year, respectively.

Estonia International Third Goalkeeper Karl Hein is also listed in Arsenal’s under-21 section, as is 19-year-old Marquinhos. George Lewis, an Under-21s winger, was a surprise selection in the Premier League squad.

Arsenal uses Emile Smith Rowe, Rob Holding, Eddie Nketiah, Ben White, Matt Smith, Aaron RamsdaleAnd Reiss NelsonThis season, fill in their domestic slots.

There aren’t any glaring omissions compared to two years ago, when Sokratis and Mesut Ozil were not included in the Premier League squad.

Squad verdict

Aston Villa has filled 24 Premier League squad slots, with Frederic Guilbert frozen out. He is likely to be a part of the development team and trains with them. His contract has less than one year remaining.

This squad includes all new signings and Diego Carlos, who gets in despite his serious injury which kept him out for most of this season.

Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson, both players who were interested in the transfer window, but couldn’t finalise their moves, are now in.

Jed Steer, one of the club’s longest-serving players, has been added, too. His Achilles injury, sustained during a loan spell at the club, is now under control. Luton TownLast season.

Emiliano Marcondes (and Siriki Dembele) are also on this list.

David BrooksAfter a complete recovery from cancer, he was included in the list. The 25-year-old has returned to training and played for the club’s under-21 side against BrentfordA week after signing a new, four-year contract with the club, Brooks was seen in late August. Brooks could be a key player in Bournemouth this season, according to the club.

Squad verdict

There are no nasty surprises in Brentford’s 23-man squad list. Thomas Frank likes to work closely with a group of players in order to ensure that there is genuine competition for spots and that nobody feels left out.

Mikkel Damsgaard arrives Aaron Hickey, Thomas Strakosha, Ben MeeAnd Keane Lee-PotterTo make room, other players were required to leave during the summer. Goode and Balcombe’s presence in the squad suggests Mads Bech Sorensen and Halil Dervisoglu could have been kept around, but the club believed it was best for the pair’s development for them to go out on loan to OGC Nice and Burnley respectively.

Squad verdict

While Brighton’s biggest concern is finding a manager to Graham Potter can be replacedTheir team reflects stability.

There aren’t any surprises after an encouraging start. Adam Lallana, who is part of the club’s interim coaching staff, has also been named in the squad and helps add to the homegrown list.

The senior squad is made up of 19 players. This allows the incoming head coach to mold the team in his image by recruiting new players in January.

It is, however, a reflection of the close-knit, dependable culture that Potter has fostered over the past few years.

Squad verdict

Beyond the understandable focus on the summer signings in Chelsea’s Premier League list, there are also signs of Todd BoehlyAnd Clearlake Capital’s efforts to trim a bloated first-team squad in their first transfer window.

Chelsea’s senior list contains only 23 players despite having eight who classify as homegrown — the summer additions of Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher helping in that regard — leaving two valuable non-homegrown spots vacant.

The new owners realized that there was enough room to add the likes Ross Barkley, Michy batshuayi and Baba Rahman. But, it didn’t make sense to keep players who have no future at Stamford Bridge.

Armando Broja, Carney ChukwuemekaCesare Casadei and Chelsea’s Cesare Casadei lead a long under-21 list. This will give Chelsea more freedom in January signings and Graham Potter more options for selecting his team. There aren’t any notable omissions.

Squad verdict

Crystal Palace’s squad list is broadly as expected, although the 21-year-old Irish centre-back Kofi Balmer is named having arrived from Larne in the summer.

In the squad, there are 12 players considered under Premier League rules to be ‘homegrown’.

Patrick Vieira repeated his belief that there was not enough squad members, and that no new recruits were available on the deadline day. This squad list reflects that. Jairo Riedewald is yet to play in this season, and would have been permitted to leave this summer. Balmer is not considered a first-team player.

James McArthur was injured Nathan Ferguson having played just eight minutes of senior competitive football, the squad looks a little thin until January’s transfer window opens, even if the options are sufficient overall.

Squad verdict

Amadou Onana is one of the big names missing from Everton’s 25-strong squad. The tall and powerful Belgian star, who was signed from Lille for a large sum this summer, is now just 21 years of age. James Garner, Anthony GordonAnd Nathan Patterson on the club’s under-21 list instead.

All are eligible to play for Frank Lampard’s side, but their absence from the senior list frees up space for other inclusions.

Part of Begovic’s appeal last summer when he signed was his status as a homegrown player, and he is one of 14 in the current squad who meet that criteria.

It is notable that the addition of Andros TownsendThe following is an update from Dr., who is continuing his recovery from the serious knee injury sustained in March against Crystal Palace.

Squad verdict

The main takeaway from Fulham’s 25-man squad is that Josh OnomahIt has been registered. The 25-year old midfielder did not take part in preseason and has not yet been in a matchday team this season. He was very close to joining, but he was not expected to leave. West Bromwich AlbionOn the deadline day, however, the paperwork was not complete and the move fell apart. Onomah, who had passed a West Brom medical, is now back in the first-team fold.

There are 24 senior players overall. Kristian Sekularac was also on the initial list. However, the 18-year old midfielder is considered an under-21 player. Two senior goalkeepers are listed, which means that George Wickens (20-year-old Academy keeper) will be the third choice for this season.

Fulham currently has 12 homegrown and twelve non-homegrown members, comfortably meeting the Premier League limit, which is 17 nonhomegrown players.

Squad verdict

There are no huge surprises in Leeds United’s squad list and the obvious names that don’t feature in it — Joe Gelhardt, Wilfried Gnonto, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville etc — are all under-21s and automatically eligible over and above the 25-man limit set by the Premier League.

Alfie McCalmont, an academy midfielder who stands out, is the one player who really jumps out. Marcelo Bielsa was famously analyzedHe used almost 20 hours worth of video footage to determine if McCalmont was ready for the first team. McCalmont’s future appears to lie away from Elland Road — he has spent the last two years on loan at Oldham Athletic and Morecambe. Leeds was also ready to let McCalmont go in the last window if a suitable alternative emerged.

McCalmont, Leeds

McCalmont is McCalmont’s number 22 and his inclusion on the list indicates that Jesse Marsch, head coach, wants him to be able to reach McCalmont if he ever gets hurt. However, Leeds is likely to not need McCalmont in this area of the pitch.

Stuart Dallas’ inclusion, meanwhile, is an indication that Leeds are hopeful that he will fully recover from his fractured femur in time to play some part in the 2022-23 campaign.

Squad verdict

There are no surprise omissions from Liverpool’s Premier League squad for 2022-23.

Squad verdict

There are no surprises.

Manchester City have a fairly small squad so they were never going to have to leave anybody out — although, with 21 senior professionals this season, they have two more than last.

They will likely have one more player going into the season than they anticipated at the beginning of the summer. They didn’t sign Marc Cucurella and couldn’t find an alternative left-back, so they brought in Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht as somebody who has high potential but is not deemed quite ready for Premier League life. They had to cancel the signing of Marc Cucurella because of injuries in the defense’s heart. signed Manuel AkanjiYou can also find them here.

There are now more options for defense than expected at the beginning of the summer. The other boys in the mix: Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez, Stefan Ortega, Erling Haaland.

A smaller outlay at least, too; Gomez and Akanji cost around £26million between them, and City were not willing to stump up £50million for Cucurella.

Squad verdict

Phil Jones being left out of Manchester United’s squad is no longer a surprise as the central defender is not available for selection as he is working on his fitness.

The 30-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford back in 2011, made just five appearances for United last season and is seemingly not in Erik ten Hag’s plans before his contract runs out next summer.

Squad verdict

Perversely, Karl Darlow’s injury came at the opportune moment for Newcastle — if not for Mark GillespieAs a consequence, the squad has been stripped of Xavier.

Darlow’s ankle problem would have occurred 48 hours later. Newcastle would then have submitted their complete 25-man list. They could not draft Loris Karius even as a free agent. Instead, Darlow flew from Liverpool to complete his medical before the deadline.

Jonjo Shelvey will not play until November, but he is named. This gives Eddie Howe another option for engine room after the inability to add a midfielder.

Squad verdict

The fact that only two players who had been part of last season’s promotion-winning squad missed the cut in the Premier League tells a significant story at Nottingham Forest.

The club This summer, 22 new signings were made which is an eye-watering figure — but they needed to add strength in depth.

Lingard

It is not surprising it. CafuAnd Lyle TaylorAlthough both may feel a bit disappointed, they did not get a spot in the newly transformed squad.

Cafu is something of a cult figure at Forest and was right at the heart of the celebrations at Wembley — but equally only started two Championship games, while making 12 sub appearances. Cafu was never likely to move from being a part-time player in the second level to playing a larger role now.

Forest was trying to find Taylor’s potential suitors. With Taiwo AwoniyiAnd Emannuel Dennis added to Steve Cooper’s forward options — which already included Brennan Johnson and Sam Surridge — Taylor was always going to drop further down the pecking order.

Harry ArterAfter being excluded from last season’s show, it was not likely that she would be included.

Squad verdict

It is not surprising that Olly Lancashire, Southampton B player-coach, has been included on this list.

The 33-year-old returned to the club in August 2021 to act as a mentor to Southampton’s young players in the B team. He has not played in the Premier League for most of his football career.

Theo Walcott also makes the cut despite being the subject of deadline-day interest from West Brom due to his lack of minutes at St Mary’s this season.

There are no surprises in West Ham’s confirmed 25-man squad as David Moyes is already working with a compact side for the 2022-23 season.

Squad verdict

The Premier League website told one story; the social media graphic did a slightly different job.

Wolves submitted only 20 of their 25 names to Premier League. The list also included Leo Bonatini (who last played for the club in November 2018).

Wolves had their own squad graphic published on Twitter. Bonatini was not there. He is technically available but in reality, does not figure in Bruno Lage’s plans and does not train with the first-team group.

This squad, which is relatively small, is supplemented with Rayan Ait-Nouri, Nathan Collins, Yerson MosqueraAnd Boubacar Traore. Although they aren’t required to be in the main squad, they can still play and are now considered senior players.

Although the league submitted a long list of under-21s, the graphic gave clear clues to Lage about which players he considers ready for the fringes. It also included goalkeepers. Jordan Smith, full-back Hugo BuenoWinger and Chem Campbell.

This list does however indicate a potential problem for Wolves next summer.

Their current list includes the maximum permitted 17 “non-homegrown” players, going a long way to explain why only 20 in total were named. Wolves don’t have any more over-21 players that meet the criteria.

If Ait-Nouri, Traore and Mosquera are all at the club in 12 months — by when none of them will qualify as either under-21s or “homegrown” — Wolves will need to make space to include them in the squad. Collins is homegrown through his four-year stint at Stoke City and one at Burnley prior to his 21st birthday.
