Police use tear gas to kill fan at Gimnasia Boca Juniors match

A 57-year old man was killed during an Argentinian first division match between Boca Juniors and Gimnasia La Plata. Police used tear gas against supporters outside the stadium.

The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to attack fans near the Gimnasia Stadium. The match was immediately suspended after players and coaches of both teams fled towards their dressing rooms.

Former Manchester UnitedMarcos Rojo, Boca’s defender, helped fans suffering from the effects. He threw several water bottles into their stands.

Police on horseback tried controlling the fans outside the stadium. TyC’s cameraman captured footage of an officer shooting rubber bullets from point-blank range. This wounded the member of the media.

La Nacion, one of Argentina’s premier news outlets, reported that 450 rubber bullet cartridges and three used canisters of tear gas were confiscated from the scene.

Reports of the match being oversold were dismissed by Gimnasia’s president Gabriel Pellegrino. The police are currently investigating the cause of the violence in the stadium and the response by the police.

Axel Kicillof, the governor of Buenos Aires province, fired the officer who was in charge the operation.

Cesar Gustavo, a Gimnasia fan, was identified as the man who was murdered. A gentleman who said he was Regueir’s brother-in-law told outlet La Republica that Regueiro “was killed on the pitch”.

“He couldn’t breathe because of all the tear gas that they threw. He died from the pitch. We want justice,” the man said.
