Police Make Split-Second Decision After Seeing an Animal in a Canal

Meet Sarge. He is a senior rescue dog and has a tendency to get into trouble. Sarge is able to handle most sticky situations on his own, but he was recently stuck in a canal and needed help.

Officers Sara Gianino (LHPPD) received a report about a dog that was having trouble swimming in the canal. Allyson and Allyson Steinkamp ran to the scene. After much circling, they finally found their terrified dog.

Officer Sara Gianino told The Dodo, “He couldn’t get out because the sea wall was so high and the tide was so low.” And it didn’t appear that he could continue swimming for very long.

The officers rapidly searched the canal’s edge for a place to stand, but they were unable to locate anything sturdy enough to do so. The officers chose the best option as they were running out time.

The LHPPD posted on Facebook, “It was decided that a broken dock would provide her the best chance to get the pup out of the sea.”

After navigating along the damaged dock, the cops made an immediate decision.

Gianino recalled, “We quickly pulled off our gear and we dived in to save him.”

Gianino, who was first to dive in to retrieve the dog, made an effort lift it up to her mate at the dock. While she was doing so, unaware family members swam past on their boat. Charles King, one of the others, saw the situation and jumped in the water to help.

King and Gianino grabbed Sarge and took him to the dock. Steinkamp, perched on a shattered dock looking for the 80-pound pup, reached out to him as they worked together to lift him from the sea.

Steinkamp was able grab Sarge’s collar and pull him toward her. As soon as his paws hit the pier, Sarge’s tail began to wag with excitement at being saved.

Steinkamp welcomed Sarge with a few pats on his back, assuring him that all would be well.

Gianino remarked, “He was so thrilled to get out.” He seemed so upbeat.

Sarge was immediately reunited with Jenny, his “lover,” and his mother, Alex Griffin.

The canine adventurer, who is now back at home with his family, is enjoying a nap and playing with his toys. And from now on, his humans will be watching him closely to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble again.
