Pitbull rescuer who misses her puppies falls in love with kittens who need a mom

Ginger loves being a mom, even though she didn’t have the babies.

Ginger recognized that her mothering skills might still be useful when she encountered foster kittens who needed a mother after her puppies were adopted.

Susan Hicks saved Ginger four years ago and has been caring for kittens since 2018. Ginger loves to explore the new kittens’ boxes and gets excited every time they arrive. Ginger is loved by the kittens and they love to play with her. Sometimes, they even try nursing from Ginger.

These kittens are weak and vulnerable when they first arrive at Hicks’ house. They are still young, fragile, and learning to live in the real world. Ginger is their comforter.

Foster parents are expected to provide kittens with a cuddly pet to help them feel at ease when they are under their care. Ginger, however, has not required Hicks to have a stuffed pet.

“Ginger is like a living, breathing, snoring body pillow for these kittens,” Hicks said.

The kittens’ early comfort level with dogs as Ginger’s socialization efforts is another benefit, which is great news for prospective adopters who already have a dog at home.

“People will reach out to me saying, ‘I want one of your kittens because I know that they’re good with dogs,” Hicks reported.

Ginger can tell Hicks when she is upset that the kittens have to leave. Ginger is well aware that when she sees the kittens go, another litter of kittens will soon be around and will require her comfort and care.
