Pennsylvania school district votes against law banning teaching any race is superior

A Pennsylvania school districtIt was unanimously voted Tuesday to ignore a bill that would prohibit teaching “racist concepts”, such as that one race is better than the next. 

The Pittsburgh School District adopted a resolution declaring that it will not support “harmful legislation,” such the Republican-backed bill HB 1532.

If HB1532 is passed into law, it would prohibit the teaching of “racist” and “sexist concepts” within school districts. It also “aims to curtail the divisive nature concepts more commonly known as “‘Critical race theory.‘”

“Critical race theory further divides us by making the immutable traits of race and gender a prime factor in how we view others – exactly the opposite of Dr. [Martin Luther]King’s dream,” according to a description of the legislation. 

“Our legislation clarifies that no Pennsylvania school district or public postsecondary institution, state or local, shall teach that any race, sex, or individual is superior to any other, or that any person should be treated favorably or discriminated against based solely on their race, sex, or gender.”

However, the resolution claimed that the bill was intended to teach history accurately.

A board member stated that they believe they have the right to learn accurately about their history and read books that reflect their culture and heritage, as well as discover who and how they identify.

The release stated that the District “formally opposes” and rejected any legislation that suppresses class discussion, promotes fear and intolerance and hate and devalues staff and students of color and LGBTQ+ students, staff and families.
