Participating in the body cam pilot program by Massachusetts prison correctional officers

Around 50 correctional officers Massachusetts prisonOfficials announced Monday that they are participating in a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of body cameras in improving safety and transparency at state Department of Correction facilities.

According to the department, the program will be held at Lancaster’s Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center. This Lancaster facility is a maximum-security facility as well as the reception center and diagnostic center for all newly-incarcerated men.

The program began last month and has been evaluated on three products. As they carry out their duties, the guards wear the cameras and add to the facility’s existing network of stationary cameras.

“The use this technology in correctional settings has been proven to increase safety and provide valuable documentation for evidenceiary purposes. Officer-involvedincidents and provide a useful tool for the department’s officers,” Carol Mici, prisons commissioner, said in a statement.
