Parents Rights Group files complaint alleging that a school play was cast in violation of the Civil Rights Act

A Parents rightsA group has filed a complaint to the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights about a high school theatre production that appears to restrict participation to students of color.

Newton North High School’s Theater Ink program is putting on a production in January 2023 titled “Lost and Found: Our Stories as People of Color.” The show audition packet states that “Lost and Found” will provide a safe space for exploration and for people with disabilities to support each other.

Parents defend Education filed complaint alleging that the action is “in violation of both Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 … and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”

The complaint continues, “The performance description doesn’t assert that participation is open to everyone.”

Theater Ink is, according to its website, “Newton North High School’s Teaching and Working Theatre is a student-centered community which emphasizes artistic collaboration and instills disciplined work ethics.”

The site links directly to a Black Lives Matter website, and the audition for “Lost and Found” asks students how they “identify racially/ethnically.” In the audition pamphlet, it is also stated that there will be weekly rehearsals to perform the show.
