Ornstein: Tottenham and Google in talks over stadium naming rights, Leeds’ Gakpo move in doubt

It has been three and a quarter years since. Tottenham Hotspur moved into their new home, a £1billion state-of-the-art stadium built on top of the old White Hart Lane. But despite chairman Daniel Levy confirming back in 2019 that the club would be interested in securing a “naming-rights deal” with the “right brand, on the right money”, no such agreement has been struck.

It could all be changing. The Athletic is reporting that Tottenham has entered into meaningful discussions with Google regarding the naming rights to the stadium’s 62,850-capacity capacity. Google, one the most valuable companies worldwide, has entered into a variety of partnerships with sports in recent years. Tottenham’s stadium holds obvious appeal. As well as hosting the club’s home matches in the Premier League Champions League — two of the most-watched football tournaments in the world — the ground also stages regular NFL matches and could yet welcome a permanent franchise in the future. The stadium has also hosted rugby league’s Challenge Cup Final, heavyweight boxing world title fights and several large concerts.

Tottenham could also benefit from a deal with Google.
