Obamas praise ‘Iranian girls and women who have inspired the whole world through their ongoing protests’

Michelle Obama and Barack Obama issued a statement Tuesday, praising Iranian protesters who took to the streets over the death last month of a 22 year-old woman while being held in custody by the so-called morality officers. 

“On this International Day of the Girl,” we stand in solidarity to the brave Iranian girls and women who have inspired the entire world with their continued protests.” The ObamasIn a statement 

“The rights they seek is universal: equality, freedom to choose how and what they wear and express their identities, as well as the freedom to do this without fear, intimidation, or violence.”

Protests continue into their fourth week against Mahsa, 22, who was arrested on Sept. 16 for improperly wearing her hijab. Although police claim she fell while being held, her family claims that her body displayed signs of beatings and bruising.

President Joe BidenObama’s vice-president, he has spoken out stronger in support of the current Iranian protests, promising to increase internet access in the face of regime attempts to restrict access to other platforms.

Tuesday’s statement by the Obamas stated that protesters were “transmitting a powerful message about injustice that should not be tolerated.” 

The Obamas stated that “we are in awe” of Iranian girls who played such a leading role in insisting on a different future and that Iranian women have the rights and opportunities they deserve.
