NYC smash-and–grab thieves steal hundreds of thousands in gems and open a Park Avenue jewelry shop.

Police said that a group of thieves broke into a Park Avenue jewelry shop and took merchandise worth hundreds of thousand dollars. 

New York City Police reported that three thieves broke into Cellini Jewelers’ glass front at E. 56th St., around 3:30 a.m. The culprits were: Group broke three display casesIt contains hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of watches and jewelry. 

Police say the thieves fled in a silver sedan, which waited outside the shop. They completed the heist in less than three minutes.

One employee stated that the crime was “not common.”

“I arrived this morning to see my crew standing out here. “I felt numb from my neck up,” said a store worker, who gave only his name as A.J. The New York Daily News. “I’ve been in the business for 40 years. It’s not normal to happen here on Park Avenue. It’s not normal to us.”

The store has yet to complete a full inventory following Saturday’s break-in.

The rise in smash-and-grab crime during the pandemic was a problem for police and continues to be a problem. Dov Hikind, an ex-New York assemblyman, said in Dec. 2021 that “These crimes are being committedThere are many real victims here.”

In that robbery, they used a large sledgehammer to break the glass cases. Others shoved jewelry into bags. The Bronx robbery saw four robbers wearing masks.
