The company believes that the 12GB model is a solid video card but it stated that the lower-spec model was “not named right.” The company did not say whether or how it might relaunch its card and was unable to provide further information when asked.
NVIDIA’s Founders edition will still sell the 16GB RTX4080 at $1,199. This effectively increases the base price of RTX 40-level hardware. It might not sound as bad as it seems, though. While the 12GB edition was originally expected to be priced at $899 (depending on third-party producers), it was likely that real-world pricing would rise.
The confusion in messaging is mostly due to differences between RAM amounts. The 12GB model has 7,680 CUDA cores and a 192 bit memory bus. Its higher-end counterpart features 9,728 cores with a 256 bit bus and 9,728 cores. Despite having the RTX4080 brand, the 12GB unit is significantly slower and has larger gaps. NVIDIA’s Your benchmarksIn well-known games, the 12GB board outperformed its 16GB sibling up to 30%. If you were expecting similar performance from the 12GB card in RAM-dependent situations, this could be a disappointment.
NVIDIA will not be affected by the cancellation. The RTX 490The launch caused lines in stores and the 4080 could be the most affordable GPU for gamers who cannot afford the flagship at $1,599, according to reports. Still, it’s rare to see a misstep like this — NVIDIA misjudged the market to the point where it had to axe a graphics card before it reached customers.
