Nottingham Forest’s power struggle that led to the sackings

After a spectacular summer and a frustrating beginning to the season Nottingham ForestYesterday was a dramatic day.

The club fired George Syrianos, head of recruitment, and Andy Scott as head scout. After a review of summer transfer strategy and business conducted by Evangelos Marinakis, the owner, and Filippo Giraldi (new sporting director), who were appointed just a few days before, they made the decision.

It is still very uncertain what the future holds for Dane Murphy, chief executive, who was close with Syrianos.

This is the situation that follows Forest’s signing 22 players were transferred in an unprecedented summer window transfer frenzy.

Only nine matches remain in the Premier League season and Forest are currently without a head of recruitment, head of scouting and head of communications. All three roles are urgently needed by the club. 

Alan Bexon, who was the head of operations and had worked at Forest for more 30 years, has also left. The Legends Lounge hosted a presentation for Alan Bexon on Monday, where he delivered an emotional farewell speech. 

The appointment of Giraldi as sporting director — a role he previously occupied for almost a decade at Watford — will help to fill some of the recruitment void. He was responsible for signing players such as Abdoulaye Doucoure, Etienne Capoue,
