Nottingham Forest have been labelled ‘embarrassing’ and ‘shocking’ for a Tweet that backfired ahead of their loss to Wolves.
Forest remained at the bottom Premier LeagueMolineux lost to the table, but their media department appeared confident going into the match.
Posting an image of Emmanuel Dennis with three baby wolf pups and the caption ‘Playtime’, the bold Post instantly taken off online.
But with Wolves taking the lead through Ruben Neves and Brennan Johnson later missing a penalty for Forest, the post magically disappeared… and Wolves then uploaded one of their own.
With a picture of an lumberjack’s axe in a tree stump [Forest’s logo is a tree] the image came with the caption ‘Playtime’s over’ in a brutal dig at their opponents.
Behind the Wolves branded axe was a billboard which appeared to say ‘safe trip back Notts Forest’ – with fans hating the shortening of their name which is reserved for rivals Notts County.
And as it turns out, Wolves’ dressing room was aware of the Tweet, which worked as pre-match inspiration.
Interim coach Steve Davis said: “Yes, we were aware of it.
“We were going to use it in the talk but Ruben said he put it on the players’ chat so I didn’t need to say any more.
“Those sort of things used to happen on the pitch. That doesn’t happen so much now, but it gave us an edge.”
Steve Cooper, Forest boss, was also asked about his post and was shocked.
“I have not seen it,” he told the BBC. “First I have heard. It is difficult to comment. Maybe I will.”
Gabby Agbonlahor from talkSPORT was more than happy to respond.
“I’m going to have a go at them, it’s embarrassing,” said the former Aston Villa captain.
“Don’t tweet anything mocking another team until after the game, if you’re going to do it.
“As a club, you’ve embarrassed Nottingham Forest.
“Why would you Tweet something like that when you’re bottom of the league and can’t buy a win?
“You put your team under pressure, it gives Wolves the team talk they needed before the game. Shocking.”
Former Wolves and Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara added: “They’re not Man City! Nottingham Forest have come up into the Premier League and they’re putting out tweets like that when you’re bottom of the league!
“Show a bit of class!”
