NJ Suspect at Large in Newark Police Officer Shooting Considered ‘armed and Dangerous,’ Officials Say

New Jersey InvestigatorsWe are asking the public to keep an eye out for the “armed, dangerous” man indicted in the attempted murder of two Newark officers Tuesday afternoon. 

Kendall Howard, 30, shot two Newark Police officers on Tuesday while they were trying to question him near Chancellor Avenue and Van Velsor Place, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said. Police are increasing their force They were on Wednesday under manhunt. 

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said officers were working to identify a suspect from a previous investigation, and went into a local building in an attempt to investigate the lead. They were unsuccessful inside the building, but as they were leaving the suspect approached them, Fragé said.

Then, they tried to Question the suspect. at which point “a violent interaction occurred,” Fragé said.

One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and face. He required surgery. According to police, the second officer was also shot in his leg. Both officers were taken to the local hospital. They are expected to survive.

Howard is still at large, but he has been charged. Attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, the prosecutor’s office said.

Police describeHoward, also known as Book, is 6-foot-3 inches tall and weighs 180-200 pounds. He has brown eyes. They are asking anyone with information related to Howard’s whereabouts to call 911.
