Twitter Headquarters began to discuss free meals on Friday. According to the New York TimesMusk says that employees will soon be required to pay for lunch in the company cafeteria.

Musk started a new debate on Twitter Sunday when he tweeted that the cost of a lunch in the last 12 months was more than $400. The annual food service costs in San Francisco are estimated at $13 million.

 

Musk tweeted, “Especially bizarre given the fact that almost nobody came to work.”

 

His polarizingA former employee of Twitter reacted negatively to the comments, claiming that she managed the free lunch program at company headquarters. Tracy Hawkins (ex-Vice President of Work Transformation at Twitter) reacted to Musk’s comments, stating that the meals were about $20-25 per person per day.

Musk and Hawkins also had a heated exchange about occupancy rates at headquarters. Musk stated peak occupancy was 25%, while average occupancy was less than 10%. Hawkins challenged these numbers and claimed office occupancy was between 20% to 50%. Musk stated that his claim was supported by badge records, but neither Musk nor Hawkins provided a timeline.

Twitter users voiced their opinion on the matter as Musk and Hawkins tried to negotiate. Some Musk was degrading Twitter’s culture of work, while others criticised Twitter’s free lunch program. It is possible to say these meals are a privilege, not a right.

Musk has just days to prepare for the possibility of a reversal in employee perk. Twitter’s policy of working from home has been scrappedMusk required employees to work at least 40 hours per week and ordered them to return to the office. Musk has taken many cost-cutting steps since Oct 27th when he purchased Twitter for $44Billion.

Insider reached Hawkins for comment but he did not respond immediately. Twitter didn’t immediately respond to Insiders request for comment.
