Democrat Gabriel Vasquez, New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District candidate, faces Republican New Mexico Rep. Yvette Sherrell.

New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional Representative District candidates

Herrell, who is a Cherokee, has joined the ranks among the very few Native Americans elected to Congress after her win in 2020. She is the firstNative American Republican woman elected US House. 

The 58 year-old New Mexico native ran in 2018 for the seat, but was narrowly defeated her opponent, Democratic attorney and former Rep. Xochitl Tores Small. Herrell It was defeatedTwo years later, it was still small.

Herrell was the 51st District representative for New Mexico before she was elected to Congress. She served four terms in New Mexico House of Representatives.

VasquezHerrell’s opponent is a Las Cruces city councilor. His opponent was defeated by Vasquez by a large margin in the Democratic primaries, where he received more than two-thirds vote. Vasquez previously worked in the southern New Mexico for US Senator Martin Heinrich.

Voting history in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District

New Mexico’s 2nd congressional district includes Las Cruces (the second largest city in New Mexico) and the western portion of Albuquerque (the largest). 

The former President Donald Trump was able to win by 12 points against Biden in the 2020 district’s boundaries. Redrawn to admit portions of northeastredistricting in the wake of the 2020 Census, its political orientation changed from Republican to Democratic.

The district used to span the entire southern section of New Mexico from one state line, and then it was expanded to encompass the entire New Mexico. 

The money race

According to OpenSecretsHerrell raised $3.9 million and spent $3.3 million. She also had $683.057 in cash as of October 19. Vasquez is her opponent. She has raised $3.2m, spent $2.9m, and has $348172 cash left to spend.

By early November, superPACs, national parties committees and other non-candidate commissions had joined forces. SpendAbout $13.4 million was spent to support or oppose candidates in this race, even during the primaries.
