It was obvious that it was coming. The next phase of Netflix’s months-long crackdown on password sharing — which itself follows the company’s first quarterly subscriber loss in a decade — is soon upon us. The company During its quarterly earnings conference on TuesdayCustomers who share login credentials will be charged an additional monthly fee, effective in the first quarter of 2023.

This is an expansion of the pilot program that’s currently in Latin America. It charges extra fees for “extrauser” subaccounts. These are users who are not part of your immediate family and use your login to access this service. Every listing on “Who’s Watching” will cost you extra. You will be charged extra for each listing if they are not also living with you.

Netflix has not yet revealed pricing for punitive fees, but if they follow a pilot program’s “one third of the base rate” scheme, it should be around US$3-4. If you want to avoid these fees, Netflix unveils Monday a tool to migrate accountsThat will transfer data from a subaccount (viewing history and recommendations) to their new, separate subscription.

The company also announced a new, cheaper, ad-supported Tier that will start on November 3rd at $7 per month. By November 10, the new tier is available in more than a dozen countries including Canada, Mexico and the UK.
