National Adopt-a Senior-Pet Month: A forever family is needed for a nine-year-old California retriever.

A senior retriever mix is hoping to have a place he can call home — finally.

The dog was once adopted by a family in 2015 — but then was returned to a shelter in November 2021 when his family faced eviction.

Fox News Digital reported that Rex was still “very loved” by Best Friends despite the rejection.

Rex has been with two foster parents since then. He’s been “wonderful” in their homes, Best Friends said.

Due to his age and kennel presentation, Best Friends said Rex isn’t always the first option for adoption.

The shelter stated, “But… he is an absolute lover.”

The group reported that Rex is calm, and for the most parts loves toys and treats.

Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society shared her thoughts in a press statement about why taking care of a senior pet is a good option. November marks National Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month.

“Whether you’re looking for an active senior to go on walks with or a couch potato to help keep you company, there are plenty of older dogs and cats who would love to be your new best friend,” she said.

“They tend to fit right into their surroundings like they’ve been with you forever.”

Castle said that senior pets are at greatest risk in shelters, despite being “tried companions” and in dire need of a second chance.

The shelter explained that although puppies and kittens can be cute, an older pet doesn’t have to go through the “destruction phase”. Instead, it can be a companion animal that wants to just hang out.

Castle said that most senior pets have been in a home at one time or another. This means they are often well-mannered.
