Brooke Jenkins, San Francisco’s District attorney, said that the attack was on Paul Pelosi — the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — at their home was “politically motivated.”
Jenkins gave more details at a Monday press conference about the horrific assault that took place on Friday night. David DePapeAccording to reports, he broke into the Pelosi home.
The district attorney stated that “Yes, it appears that based on his statements & comments made in that house during Mr. Pelosi’s encounter with him, that this was politically motivated.”
A reporter asked her if there was evidence that Jenkins might have characterized DePape’s actions in an assassination plot. She replied that DePape was searching for the house speaker at the time he entered and that investigators believed there had been “an attempt to kill her husband” when they arrived.
Jenkins claimed that DePape had broken the glass in the back door of the Pelosi house and found Mr. Pelosi asleep on the second floor. DePape confronted him about the whereabouts of his wife.
Jenkins stated that Pelosi tried to then resign. EscapeDePape blocked the elevator to allow Pelosi to use the phone in the house’s home. Jenkins stated that Pelosi requested to go to the toilet and then called 911 from his cellphone.
DePape saw that Pelosi had called law enforcement and he took him downstairs to the front door. Two police officers arrived at the house within minutes, according to the district attorney.
Jenkins stated that DePape was wielding a hammer when officers arrived and that he “violently struck” Jenkins [Pelosi]”At the top of his heads.”
DePape was apprehended and charged with attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official and their family, according to Jenkins.
On Monday, in addition to the state charges mentioned above, there were also the Justice Department announced that DePape would be facing two felony chargesOne count of assaulting an immediate family member (US official) with the intent of retaliating against the official for the performance or official duties. One count of attempted kidnapping a US official for the performance or official duties.

Jenkins stated that the attack was a stark reminder of the violence of today’s political divisions.
She said, “It’s sad to see that once again we are at a point where people believe it’s okay for them to express their political views through violence.” It really shows that we need to calm down. We must decide that American society will be more respectful, and that disagreements are okay.
