NAACP Criticizes Elon Musk’s Decision To Let Trump Back On Twitter

  • Elon Musk’s decision not to reinstate Donald Trump on Twitter was criticized by the president of NAACP.

The president of NAACP was furious at the reinstatement by former President Donald Trump on twitter and demanded an end to all advertising on that platform.

On Saturday Musk asked users to vote on the site.52% chose “yes” when asked to “Reinstate former President Donald Trump.”

Trump’s account was also reactivated that day. Though Musk appeared to attribute the decision to this — decidedly unscientific — polling method, He had stated, before he took over the company that he would.

Over the weekend, Derrick Jackson, President of NAACP, criticized Musk’s use of a “garbage survey” to gauge public opinion on the decision. 

Jackson quoted Musk’s announcement by tweeting it, and wrote that Musk “failed our democracy.”

He said, “Your trash poll doesn’t mean anything.” Are there people from other countries who voted? Did you reach out to marginalized communities — the targets of Trump’s rhetoric — for their input? Your followers don’t represent America. God bless us all if you run Twitter this way.

 

He tweeted shortly after the decision was made: “Any advertiser still financing Twitter should immediately stop all advertising now.”

Trump’s Twitter ban came quickly after the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021. The company said at the time that it made the decision due to “the risk of further violence incitement.”

Jackson commented directly on this, also tweeting on Saturday: “In Elon Musk’s Twittersphere, you can incite an insurrection at the US Capitol, which led to the deaths of multiple people, and still be allowed to spew hate speech and violent conspiracies on his platform.”

Trump’s ban was triggered by the Capitol Riot, but he used Twitter before then to make racist, racially insensitive comments.

It was understood that the tweets were directed at four women of color in Congress, three of which were born in America. 

Trump tweeted famously about the George Floyd protests in 2020: “When looting starts…the shooting starts.” The Southern Poverty Law Center condemned the sentenceas glorifying violence against protesters or encouraging right-wing extremists. 

Insider asked for comment from Trump spokesperson, but they did not respond immediately. 

Donald Trump also stated on Saturday that he does not see any reason for him to rejoin Twitter. Reuters reported.
