Musk claims that SpaceX has spent $80 million to support Starlink in Ukraine

  • After being bombarded by Ukraine diplomats on Twitter, he tweeted: “Obviously, we’re pro Ukraine.”
  • Musk drafted a peace plan to end the Russia-Ukraine War, which resembled Putin’s propaganda.

Elon Musk has been embroiled in a Twitter spat with Ukrainian officials. 

The whole thing began Monday when Musk published a Twitter poll about a plan of peace for Ukraine. Backlash ensued, with Ukrainians expressing concern about the poll. Diplomats lambasted Musk over the pollIt seemed to have recited the Kremlin’s talking points.

Late on Monday night, Musk said he is “obviously” pro-Ukraine, writing on Twitter that SpaceX has spent $80 million running Starlink in Ukraine.

“SpaceX’s out of pocket cost to enable & support Starlink in Ukraine is ~$80M so far. Russia’s support is 0. He wrote that Russia has our support.

Starlink is SpaceX’s satellite communication system. Use by Ukrainian soldiers to communicate on the battlefield. The Russian shells, jamming, and power outages rendered voice and internet services inoperable. 

 

Musk’s first Twitter PollA vote was needed on a list that he suggested could lead to peace in Ukraine and Russia. This list included redoing the elections for regions annexed recently by Russia and acknowledging Russia’s annexation Crimea.

The poll was quickly answered by Ukrainian officials, including Volodymyr Zilenskyy, Ukraine’s President, and Andrij Malnyk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany. Zelenskyy also tweeted his poll asking people which Musk they prefer: the one who supports Russia or the one who supports Ukraine. 

While the Twitterverse was focusing on Musk’s likeability as a peace plan and Musk’s peace plans, Musk’s Starlink has been supporting Ukrainian war efforts on ground.

Since the start of war, Musk has sent thousands upon thousands of Starlink satellite kit kits to Ukraine. He’s trying to sell satellite services to other countries and he’s testing these satellite services. perWall Street Journal

One platoon commander at the Izyum front in Ukraine said to the Journal that “without Starlink, it would have been losing war already.”
