Michigan woman arrested for failing scan all items at Walmart self checkout

A Michigan womanShe was accused of stealing Walmart items by failing to scan all her items at self-checkout.

According to policeTeddyJo Marie Fliam, 34, was shopping at an Alpena County Walmart self-checkout when she noticed that she wasn’t scanning all items. According to Fox 2, Fliam was upset and claimed she wasn’t scanning all items. She then left the store.

Fliam stole over $1,000 worth of merchandise from Walmart without scanning it since April. The store had to review its surveillance footage.

Fliam was taken into custody at her Alpena residence last month. She is being charged with the first degree. Retail fraud.

Alpena County Walmart’s Loss Prevention Team has begun to crackdown on thefts at the self checkout. Michigan State Police recently recorded two similar incidents, in which people were taken into custody after exchanging barcodes while shopping. 

Walmart used artificial intelligence in 2019 to combat self-checkout thefts. They used camera to scan every bag to ensure that all items were scanned.

Missed Scan Detection is internally known as the system. It monitors both self-checkout stations and manned checkout stations. The attendant can then investigate any missed scans.

Walmart spokesperson stated that Walmart was making a genuine investment to protect our customers and associates. Walmart has spent more than half a million dollars over the past three years to combat crime in its stores and parking lots. To keep our communities and stores safe, we continue to invest in people, technology and programs.
