Michael Schumacher’s nephew, David, has been left with a fractured vertebra after a horrifying German touring car crash.
The DTM involved three drivers [Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters]Hockenheim: An engine was taken out of a car and there was a terrifying blaze at the track.
The 20-year-old Mercedes driver was tagged by Thomas Preining’s Porsche on lap six of the race, sending both flying into the barrier with Schumacher’s bonnet wrapped over his windscreen.
The cars were forced to return to the track in front of incoming traffic. This caused damage to several other competitors.
Worst of all was Denis Olsen. He was involved in an incident behind, lost control of his Porsche and crashed into a barrier, causing a scary collision on the inside corner.
Olsen’s engine was ripped out of his car and began a fire on track, but incredibly both he and Preining were left uninjured.
Schumacher wasn’t as lucky, with his father, six-time Formula 1 race winner Ralf, now revealing he will be out for around six weeks.
“When David came home he was still complaining of back pain,” Ralf told Motorsport-Magazin.com.
“We then decided to go to a hospital in Salzburg to have an MRI done.
“It turned out that a lumbar vertebra was broken. According to the doctors treating David, this means a break of around six weeks.”
It’s also been confirmed the youngster will not need surgery and is currently wearing a binding corset to stabilise his back.
There were 11 drivers who failed to finish the race one of the season finales. Sheldon van der Linde won the championship.
