Mercedes F1 team used biofuel in order to reduce freight carbon emissions by 89 per cent

Although F1 isn’t the most eco-friendly company, it is trying to make it more so. F1 is focused on The decade will be over Have been These changes have been made over the past few decades. F1 leaders want to use sustainable fuels only in F1 cars . But race cars are only one part of the puzzle. To hold two dozen grand prix around world, you need to shift cars, parts, or other materials between circuits. This will generate more carbon dioxide.

Mercedes-AMG F1 has however been successful. Have you ever tried it?It was done in order to reduce freight emissions. It used 16 trucks to transport hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO 100), biofuel, between Spa and Zandvoort for the three final European grand prix. Mercedes was able to ship components and cars without relying on air freight because the circuits are so close together. This gave the team an opportunity to test the biofuel with a driving distance around 1,400km (870 miles). Due to shortages, the team had to use diesel fuel for the final 20km (just under 12 miles).

HVO 100 was found to reduce freight emissions by 89 per cent according to an analysis. Mercedes saved 44.091kg (97.204 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions by using HVO 100 for both journeys, as opposed to solely using diesel. HVO 100 is made entirely from vegetable oils, oils and fats. Additionally, the fuel emits less Nox or particulate emissions.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 team principal, said that testing biofuels to transport our land freight is another example how Mercedes F1 team has committed to embed sustainability into every decision they make and action they take. “We aim to be on the cutting edge of change and hope we can make the adoption of sustainable technology possible as we are all in the race towards a sustainable tomorrow.”

Formula 1 is also testing other biofuels. E10 biofuels, which contain 10% renewable ethanol, were introduced to F1 cars in this season’s transition to fully sustainable fuels. Even though it’s still far from using fully sustainable fuels in motorsport, E10 biofuels and HVO 100 are positive steps in the right direction.
