Media lately acknowledge GOP surge, even among conservatives.

When I saw this front page, I was certain that the media had finally, reluctantly, and somewhat sadly, come to terms with the fact that Republicans would win the House and possibly the Senate. New York Times piece:

“The Dreaming-of-F.D.R. is a dream for President Biden. His presidency could be over in a week. If Republicans capture one or both houses of Congress in midterm elections, as polling suggests, Mr. Biden’s domestic agenda will suddenly transform from a quest for a New Deal 2.0 to trench warfare defending the accomplishments of his first two years in office.”

The “if” clause is only a formality. You don’t publish that story unless you think the Republicans are a lock to take over the House; the only question is by how many seats.

What’s more, “Biden and the Democrats are privately… pessimistic and bracing for two years of grinding partisan conflict.” That’s a pretty clear media signal. Axios also has a “Red Tsunami Watch.”

ELECTION FORECASTERS SHIFT MORE HOUSE RACE RACES ONE WEEK BEFORE THE MIDTERM EELECTIONS

According to the poll conducted with Siena College The TimesArizona Senator Mark Kelly has a six point lead over Blake Masters (though Blake Masters was just elected). At 47%, Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican Adam Laxalt are tied. Herschel Walker, who’s endured an avalanche of negative coverage – and the second abortion accuser went on camera yesterday with “Good Morning America” – is trailing Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock by just 2 points, a statistical tie.

The poll in Pennsylvania shows John Fetterman leading Mehmet Oz by 5 points. However, most of the survey was done before the disaster debate. The paper notes that Fetterman was still ahead on the one day of post-debate polling, but I’d be surprised if Oz isn’t ahead in the next poll.

The Times followed-up yesterday with governor’s races in those states. Georgia Governor. Brian Kemp is 5 points ahead of Stacey Abrams (other polls give him an even larger lead).

Nevada Republican Sheriff Joe Lombardo is 4 points ahead of Gov. Steve Sisolek. Arizona has Kari lake and Katie Hobbs, both 48 percent.

But Lake is widely expected to win – Hobbs is refusing to debate her – and she’s a classic example of media myopia. Arizona’s Democratic Party meddled in her primary by taking a whack at her opponent on the theory that she was such an extremist she’d be an easy mark in the general election. Now, the Times describes her as “a telegenic former news anchor with a missionary spirit to promote her agenda.” Some conservatives also praise her. Donald Trump’s running mateFor 2024.

CANDIDATE USES MORE PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RANCH THAN PHILLIES PAY HARPER

Lake believes that Trump stole the last election. She is determined to ban abortion without exceptions. She hates to criticize the media for being biased. The other day, she made a joke about Paul Pelosi’s serious injury and the audience laughed.

But she still has the trust of her Phoenix anchor colleagues over the 25-year period. This is why media outlets were quick to dismiss her.

It is obvious that the gubernatorial contests this year are of particular importance. Because of abortionTheir secretaries of state can also challenge the outcome of 2024 because they are some of the most ardent election deniers in Arizona.

The media’s attempt to minimize Lake Masters, Walker and others, who could win, was a massive mistake of the first magnitude.

The earlier Times report on Biden’s agenda also mentions the prospect of multiple GOP investigations – which the White House must be bracing for. Keep in mind that just by controlling the House, you do not control it. Kevin McCarthy’s lieutenantsHe will be a chair of committees and issue subpoenas. Hillary Clinton and Benghazi come to mind.

As Matthew Continetti National Review:

“The Republican Congress will stand with the president on spending, immigration and the IRS. It will also fight for the debt ceiling. And it will open investigations into Biden’sPersonal and professional life. Divided government in a polarized America doesn’t simply halt a president’s legislative agenda. It reduces the energy of the executive by forcing it to a defensive crouch.

Continetti recalls how every president, from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump, was aggressively investigated and questioned by the opposition Congress. He concluded: “The job as president has been difficult for Joe Biden. It’s about to get a lot worse.”

One of the weird things about this final stretch before next Tuesday’s midterms, in addition to Biden’s low-key presence, is that Democrats are assigning blame in advance – adding, of course, to the party’s gloom. Predictions about the Senate don’t make much sense because in off-year elections, turnout is everything.

But it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that, with the shot clock winding down, these midterms are breaking in the Republicans’ direction.
