In a recent interview, Michael Fanone, former Washington, DC Metropolitan Police officer, stated that Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader, told him that he could not “control” fringe members of GOP about their views on the January 6, 2021 riot at Capitol.

Fanone — who served as a Metropolitan officer for roughly 20 years before resigning from the force last December — SubmittedDon Lemon, CNN anchor on “Don Lemon Tonight”, said that he was stunned by the inability of California Republican members to rein in those in his party who were downplaying the events of January 6.

The former officer — who is now an on-air contributor to the network — informed Lemon that after leaving a meeting with McCarthy last year, he felt “disillusioned and depressed.”

“He didn’t really have much to say. There really wasn’t a lot of substance to the conversation outside of the fact that I asked for some specific things, and one of them being that he would denounce members of the party that were downplaying and denying the reality of January 6 — the reality of Donald Trump’s involvement with January 6. Fanone replied that he wouldn’t consent to do so.

He added: “And even greater, he said he couldn’t manage these fringe members of His party, which was quite shocking coming from someone who calls themselves Leader McCarthy, being leader of the House GOP.”

Fanone stated that he felt “indifference” while trying to hold the attacker accountable for the attack. He was also beaten unconscious and tased around his neck. He also suffered from a mild heart attack as well as a traumatic head injury.

“The fact that I sat there in a room, having been a victim of the violence that day sitting next to the mother of a dead police officer — that being Brian Sicknick — and seeing a person who chose his political future and what he thought would be best for his party rather than to show some level of compassion or empathy for the people that were sitting in front of him,” Fanone said of McCarthy.

“To him, were we an inconvenience,” he said.

Officer Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer, died after suffering two strokes. Chief medical examiner of Washington, DC ruled that he died of natural causes.

McCarthy was also asked by the then-officer to reject comments made by Andrew Clyde, a Republican from Georgia. arguedIt was a “bald-faced lie” to call January 6 an insurrection.
