Masters, Arizona Senate Candidat, supports McConnell challenge for GOP leader

Blake Masters, a potential Arizona Senate candidate, said Monday that Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell shouldn’t be the Republican leader of the next Congress. 

Masters The Wall Street JournalHe stated in an interview that if elected, he would support McConnell’s challenger for the right to lead Senate Republicans. 

Masters stated, “I believe we need new leadership.”

Masters said earlier Monday to reporters that, should he lose incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, he would not be bound to McConnell at the Senate.

McConnell will not own me, McConnell won’t love you.” He clearly had the opportunity to help. He didn’t do it,” Masters said. 

He said, “He doesn’t want me there, but he’s about to be stuck alongside me.” 

Fox News reached out to McConnell’s office but was not able to get a reply before publication. 

Masters is not the first to fire shots at McConnell.

Masters called for McConnell’s replacement as a result of the Arizona Republican Primary. GOP leader, saying he’d support Sens. The position is open to Josh Hawley, Missouri, or Tom Cotton, Arkansas. McConnell, he said, was not good at legislating.

“I’ll tell Mitch this to his face,” Masters said during a GOP primary debate in June. “He’s not bad at everything. He’s good at judges. He’s good at blocking Democrats. You know what he’s not good at? Legislating.”

Masters was nominated Republican for Senate. It appeared that he was changing his tune. He promised McConnell that he would “find a way together” and asked for financial support from McConnell in August. The McConnell-aligned Super PAC Senate Leadership Fund cut Arizona’s ad spending by $8 million and shifted the funds to other races. 

The Wall Street Journal reported that a spokesperson for Senate Leadership Fund highlighted the fact that a sister PAC spent over $13million in Arizona to elect Masters.

Republicans must defeat Democratic Senate challenges to incumbents, and then only defeat one Democratic senator in order to win a majority.
