Massachusetts governor debate: Geoff Diehl, Maura Shealey spar about raising taxes and exorbitant fuel costs

Thursday night was the final Massachusetts governor debate. Geoff Diehl, a Republican candidate, and Maura Shealey were the candidates who sparred over taxation as well as how to manage the energy crisis.

Healey, currently the state’s Attorney General, said “cutting taxes” would be a priority under her administration but later dodged a question on whether she would commit to not Taxes should be raised

Conversely, Diehl, a Donald TrumpHe was an ex-state legislator, who was unanimously endorsed. He repeatedly said that he wouldn’t “anticipate ever rising taxes” and opposed the idea of raising taxes on the wealthy.

“We’re overtaxing people,” he added.

Healey refused to answer questions about tax increases and stated that she would not make “any specific promises.”

“The Economic healthThe governor’s priority and responsibility is to ensure the well-being of the state,” said the Democrat.

Immediately following Healey’s refusal not to make the tax pledge, Diehl’s campaign pushed the point to his supporters.

In an email addressed to his supporters The RepublicanAdded: “There is one thing you should know about tonight’s debate in the race to Governor — Maura HEADY REFUSED TO promise voters that her taxes will not be raised.”

He said, “That’s an alarming sign for voters.” “Maura Shealey is actually already working hard for tax increases by supporting Question One. Geoff Diehl, the only candidate who will make Massachusetts affordable, is without doubt the best choice for our next Governor.

The debate saw the candidates for governor discuss the ongoing Energy crisisThe state’s rising energy costs. Diehl pointed out Healey’s record of blocking plans for two gas pipelines and attempted to pit her deterring energy supplies on rising costs in what is expected to be a pricey winter.

Healey still leads Diehl by a substantial margin in national polling. However, it has lost five points over the past three months.

The last televised debate featured WCVB Channel 5, in partnership with WBUR, Univision and the Boston Globe.
