Mason Greenwood has been remanded in custody following an appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The 21-year-old has been charged with attempted rape, assault and ‘repeatedly engaging’ in coercive and controlling behaviour.
All three charges are related to the same female.
Before the court heard the details against him, the Manchester United footballer confirmed that he was his name, address and date of birth at the hearing.
District Judge Mark Hadfield elected to not grant him bail and he will appear before Manchester Crown Court on Monday, November 21 – the day of England’s World Cup opener against Iran.
Greenwood was arrested in January for allegations against a young girl after photos and videos were posted online.
He had been released on bail since then, but was detained in Trafford for an alleged breach.
According to the allegations, the attempted rape occurred in October 2021.
This controlling and coercive behavior is related to the period November 2018 to October 2018. He is alleged that he made derogatory and threatening comments towards the complainant and accessed and monitored her social media accounts.
The December 2021 charge for assault occasioning actual bodily injury is filed.
Manchester United suspended Greenwood due to the allegations. Nike also removed him from FIFA 22.
A statement from the club on Saturday said: “Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service.
“He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”
