Maryland high schools suspend football after a game-ending dispute: “Abhorrent, unacceptable”

Temporarily, football is suspended at two High school in MarylandA brawl brokeout during a Friday night football game. Additional fights ensued with injuries.

When the Northwest Jaguars invaded Gaithersburg, the Trojans of Gaithersburg were playing host to them. FOX 5 DC reported. Officials stopped the game before the end and declared Northwest, who had a 14-0 advantage, the winner. Both schools are part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district.

Gaithersburg police posted on Facebook that officers from their police department and Montgomery County police responded in good faith to a report of a fight High school around 8:23 p.m. 

Officials from the school said that there had been “several scuffles” outside the stadium while officers dealt with the fight.

According to Gaithersburg police, the fights led to several injuries and many arrests. One victim received cuts and one school employee was treated by medical personnel. 

A second officer, unidentified, was also assaulted in the incident. However, he reportedly didn’t require medical care.

Montgomery County police stated that a person with a knife and “a few others” were taken into custody. All were charged according to authorities.

The Montgomery County Public SchoolsThe following statement was issued Saturday, “strongly condemning” what happened the night before.

“Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) strongly condemns the abhorrent and unacceptable behavior that occurred at the football game last night – on Friday, September 16, 2022 – between Northwest and Gaithersburg at Gaithersburg High School.  The district is working quickly to create and implement safer athletic events. We will be sharing these with the community in coming days.

To assist with the ongoing investigation, all football operations at both schools and MCPS will be temporarily suspended. District will take disciplinary action against anyone found to have been involved in the large altercation. It will also work to bring together communities around the importance for upholding safe, respectful environments.
