Man City and FC Copenhagen suffer 30 minutes of VAR chaos in Champions League as Rodri denied ‘goal of the season contender’ by ‘absolutely crazy’ handball decision and Sergio Gomez sent off

Rodri was disqualified from the goal of season competition and Sergio Gomez was expelled by Manchester City in 30 minutes of VAR chaos.

Riyad Mahrez even had time to skip a VAR-awarded penality in between.

Just last weekend, the Premier League was shattered by confusion over spot-kicks and goals being allowed or ruled out due to handball.

And there was no respite in the Champions League as a 25-yard screamer from Rodri was chalked off because the ball brushed Mahrez’s hand in the build-up.

Speaking on commentary for talkSPORT 2, ex-Premier League midfielder Matt Holland said: “If you’re ruling goals out for this… it’s a 25-yard rocket from Rodri.

“It’s an absolute screamer and it’s the slightest touch on Mahrez’s hand.

“I’d love to know this handball law. It needs to be changed.

“On the weekend… Dan Burn, Gabriel, Marcus Rashford, Michail Antonio.

“What is handball? Nobody knows what handball is anymore.

“I’m still shaking my head in disbelief. I know it’s touched Mahrez’s hand.

“But to disallow a goal like that for something minnescule is crazy. Absolutely crazy.”

And talkSPORT 2 commentator Alex Crook added: “What it has done is denied us one of the goals of the season in the Champions League.”

The VAR-fuelled drama didn’t end there.

City would receive a penalty shortly thereafter for another disputable handball decision following a review at monitor.

Mahrez, however, would have his 12-yard attempt saved.

Artur Dias, referee, was then sent to the screen again, this time with just 29 minutes left. He wanted to see if Gomez would accept a last-ditch attempt at the City defender.

The Spaniard was adjudged to unfairly deny Hakon ArnarHaraldsson a chance at scoring goals in Copenhagen.

Although this decision seemed correct, Pep Guardiola, the City manager was left confused by half an hour of heavy interferance from technology.
