Apple released macOS Ventura’s first version to Mac users Monday, October 24, 2010. Here’s what you need to know about the new features, whether they will run on your Mac, and how Apple’s apps including Mail and Safari will be changing.
Updated 10/24 All users now have macOS 13 Ventura.
macOS Ventura: Name, release date
The Ventura name maintains Apple’s recent tradition of giving every version of macOS a name in addition to a version number. The name Ventura is taken from a California landmark, as it has been since Mavericks was launched in 2013. Prior to that, large cats were used as names for Apple’s Mac operating systems (Jaguar, Lion, etc.). This time the version number will be 13 (unlucky for some, but that didn’t stop Apple from calling the 2021 iPhone the iPhone 13).
Apple announced the features that will be in the next macOS version during the WWDC-2022 keynote on June 6th at 10 a.m. PST. On Monday, October 24, the final version was released. Like previous releases, it was made available for download on Monday, October 24, at 10 a.m.PT.

macOS Ventura: Latest beta version
The final macOS Ventura version is now available for all users. We expect the first macOS 13.1 beta to be available for testers very soon.
macOS Ventura: Compatibility
Apple confirmed that macOS Ventura supports the following Macs:
- MacBook models starting in 2017 and later
- MacBook Air models available starting in 2018
- MacBook Pro models starting in 2017 and later
- Apple Mac mini models starting in 2018
- iMac models starting in 2017 and later
- iMac Pro (all Models)
- Mac Pro models starting in 2019
- Mac Studio (all models).
The following Macs were supported by Monterey in the past but have been removed from the list.
- iMac (models starting in 2015)
- MacBook Air (models starting in 2015 and 2017)
- MacBook Pro (2015 and 2016, models)
- Mac mini (2014 models).
- Mac Pro (2013 model – cylinder/trash can)
- MacBook 2016 model
The 2014 Mac mini was sold until 2018, the ‘trash can’ Mac Pro until 2019, and the 2017 MacBook Air was sold until July 2019. We had thought that Apple wouldn’t remove those Macs from the supported list, since people might have purchased the model just such a short time ago. They will continue to be supported for at most two more macOS generations by macOS Monterey. Stage Manager
With the introduction of Stage Manager – a new way to manage your desktop clutter that reminds us a little bit of Spaces, because it allows you to organize working areas and hide them away, albeit at the side of your screen, rather than the top. Here’s Stage Manager: How to organize your windows.
Continuity camera
Another continuity-related feature lets you use your iPhone as both a webcam or to Handoff a FaceTime conversation from your iPhone/iPad to your Mac. macOS Ventura App Updates
Apple has made many changes over the years to the Mac’s operating system. We can also expect more from them this year. Safari and Mail are getting several new features. There are also updates to Weather and Clock.
Mail now supports improved search. However, the most anticipated feature of Mail will be the ability cancel delivery of email after clicking send. We imagine there may be a time limit. You can also schedule email sending. Both are features offered by third parties, but it’s good to see them coming to Apple’s email software. Read How to schedule and desend e-mails in Apple MailClick here for more information.
There is some confusion over the inclusion of the Hide My Mail feature, which should mean that it isn’t a requirement to share your email with third parties. Apple initially referred to this feature. However, it has since been removed from the Ventura webpage that describes email features in Ventura. Hide My Email isn’t new to Ventura – it arrived in Monterey in 2021, but in Ventura Apple was expected to extend it to third parties.
Messages
Like the iOS version, Messages on Mac will let users edit messages that have already been sent or recover messages that were accidentally deleted.
Safari
As a secure way to identify you, Passkeys will also be generated and associated with Touch ID/Face ID. These keys will replace passwords. Apple claims that “Passkeys are unique digital keys that stay on the device and are never stored on a web server,” therefore they are more secure because it is impossible to leak one, or for anyone to phish one from you.
