MA Gov. Baker: Washington’s inability to fix immigration will lead to Massachusetts spending $139 Million

Charlie Baker, Governor of Massachusetts, is asking state legislators to ease the burden a large influx of migrants has placed on his state. The state’s shelter resources

“Massachusetts’ emergency shelter system provides support for thousands of families each year, but a recent uptick in new migrant arrivals, coupled with a strained housing market have led to a need for greater capacity across the system,” Baker stated this in a Friday statementRequest $139 million for funding to support emergency housing.

Baker’s administration says the increase in the number of migrants in the state is “unfortunately driven by the federal government’s inability to address our country’s immigration challenges.”

If the bill is passed, $73million would be used to provide more than 1,300 temporary shelter units. $20 million would be used for the establishment of a temporary central intake centre. $37 million would be used to place children in local schools until the end of fiscal 2024.
