Salvatore was not affected even though nobody had entered the Florida home in several weeks. The dog guarded and waited patiently outside the house for his family.
Gloria Cabal is a local dog rescuer who saw Salvatore at the station and decided she needed to take action.
Salvatore was a frightened dog that refused to give up his yard, despite Cabal’s best efforts for more than a month to entice him to her.
Salvatore saw that his family wasn’t returning and was forced to move into a nearby park by a new realtor. Salvatore approached Cabal to allow her to take Salvatore to the Everglades Angels Dog Rescue.
“He was very protective of his yard,” Everglades Angels staff member Denise Guevara said. “He basically was guarding his property, but not, you know, aggressively or ferociously.”
After feeling at ease, Salvatore quickly embraced the helpers. The Everglades Angels team was devastated to lose the dog, who had a deep love for people.
“He is a volunteer favorite,” Guevara said. “From what we were able to gather, he grew up with a family.”
Salvatore, who had previously avoided interacting with strangers, became one of the shelter’s friendliest residents by persistently pleading for petting and jumping up on couches to cuddle on people’s laps.
Guevara added, “He’s really, really a sweetheart.”
Salvatore is available for adoption through Everglades Angels, and the organization’s staff is confident he will be adopted soon.
Salvatore’s second chance will be with a family who will never abandon Salvatore because so many animal lovers have refused to give up.
