Los Angeles mayoral race: Bass surpasses Caruso, who has a lead of 4,000 votes

The Democratic Rep. Karen Bass is leading over Rick Caruso, a billionaire businessman, in the highly contested Los Angeles mayoral race. But there are others. There are still thousands upon thousands of votesTo be counted. 

The most recent returns from Los Angeles County Registrar’s OfficeShow Bass won by 4,384 votes. This is in addition to Caruso (an ex-Republican) with 289,782 (50.4%) and 285,398 (24.9%). 

But, nearly 40% of ballots are still uncounted. The race is too close to call. According to the Registrar’s Office, voter turnout is approximately 27%. 

Los Angeles County election officials estimated that there are more than 800,000. Those include about 790,000 votes by mail ballots21,000 provisional and 300 conditional voter registration ballots.

“The county clerk’s office indicated that the number of unofficial Vote by mail ballots could rise as the RR/CC accepts ballots that have been postmarked before Election Day and received by Tuesday November 15.” These ballots are not included within the estimate. 

Although Bass, a progressive congresswoman is expected to win in the historically far-left city of San Francisco, Caruso has attracted attention. Many celebrity endorsementsAfter pledging to improve the city’s approach to crime and homelessness, In the months preceding the election, Caruso had been supported by Elon Musk, Kim Kardashian and Chris Pratt, as well as Katy Perry.

According to government records Caruso was a RepublicanFor more than two decades, before he became an independent in 2011. Caruso changed back to Republican in 2016 — a year when he served as California campaign co-chair for Republican John Kasich’s presidential bid — and then to independent again in 2019. Just before he was elected to the Mayoral Race in February, he switched to Democrat.

Bass is a six-term congresswomanReprezents California’s 37th Congressional district. Her endorsement was given by former President Barack Obama, Julia Louise-Dreyfus and Danny Trejo.
