Liverpool’s title hopes are extinguished. They are now their worst enemies

Seven years ago to the day, Jurgen Klopp had vowed to turn “doubters into believers” at his Anfield unveiling.

He found himself in the most difficult situation since his arrival on Merseyside as the dust settled at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

It was a sad anniversary for the Liverpool manager. Another Premier LeagueBoth defeat and loss Luis DiazAnd Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury.

Brendan Rodgers lost his job in October 2015 and Klopp was elected as his successor. With 12 points from eight matches, the club sat in 10th position in the Premier League table.

Today they occupy the same mid-table spot with just 10 points from eight games — their worst return at this stage of a season since 2012-13 when they ultimately finished seventh.

Klopp has achieved so much in the intervening years — from Champions LeagueFrom glory in Madrid, ending the 30-year-old title drought and winning a domestic cup twice, he was a hero. He’s the most transformative figure in Liverpool’s history since Bill Shankly and rightly retains the unwavering backing of owners and supporters alike.

But, the wheels have fallen off. The team that had threatened to win it all five months ago now appears to be an also-ran. This defeat ended any hopes of a title challenge. Liverpool are currently 14 points behind
