Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has won one of the nation’s closest-watched Senate races in Nevada, deciding the fate of Senate control for the next two years.
Masto, who became history in 2016 by being elected the country’s first Latina Senator, won this year’s elections against Republican Adam Laxalt (a former state attorney-general) with TK% vote in a race unanimously rated “tossup” by Inside Elections, The Cook Political ReportAnd Sabato’s Crystal Ball at University of Virginia Center for Politics.
The contest was too close to call several days after voting had ended. Absentee ballots were still being counted, and processing times were slow in the two counties that include the large cities of Las Vegas (and Reno). Masto’s victory ensures Democratic control of Senate until the next round in two years.
The Senate’s 2022 election cycle is not over, however, because neither Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock nor GOP challenger Herschel Wade received more than 50% of the vote. As a result, a December runoff election will be held.
The results of the House election are still being reported.
