LIV Golf partners up with tour to improve world rankings

LIV GolfIn an effort to allow its golfers to earn Official World Golf Ranking points, it has formed an alliance avec the MENA Tour.

The MENA Tour was recognized by the OWGR board in May 2016, but it has been mostly inactive in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic — the tournament did not hold any events in 2021, and just five in 2020.

The Dubai-based Shaikh Maktoum golf Foundation founded the tour in 2011. It has tournaments in North Africa, and the Middle East.

David Spencer, MENA Tour’s commissioner, said that it was an exciting day for both the MENA Tour (and our players). Our players will have stronger paths and better playing opportunities thanks to this alliance. This is fantastic news for many young players on the Tour.

Spencer said that the “alliance will increase the MENA Tour’s developmental programs.”

Last month, 50 golfers Signed a LetterTo the Chairman of the OWGR requesting that their results be included on the rankings.

“An OWGR that does not include LIV would be incomplete or inaccurate. It would be like leaving the Big 10 and the SEC out the U.S. Ranking college footballThe letter suggested that England should be left out of the FIFA rankings, which would mean leaving Argentina, England and Belgium.

Players claimed they should be awarded points if their competition is at minimum equal to the PGA Tour’s. They feel this partnership is a step forward in the direction that they want.

LIV Golf president and COO Atul Kosla said that the mutually beneficial action was taken to support the game at its developmental level. “We are happy to create pathways that offer more opportunities for younger players and provide fans with rankings that include all of the top golfers around the world.

According to MENA the partnership will “immediately qualify LIV Golf OWGR points, beginning with the LIV Golf Thai event at Stonehill this Week.”
