Little Family spends days in abandoned house, waiting for someone to find them

Donna Lochmann was aware that she needed to investigate the situation when she got a call from a neighbor about a terrified puppy in an abandoned house. It was obvious that there was a small family in the basement and they needed help.

According to Lochmann, the chief lifesaving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, “As soon as we got out of the car, we could hear multiple babies crying.”

Lochmann was able to locate three fearful puppies around six weeks of age, who were screaming in the basement.

Lochmann also heard their mother barking in another part of the house. Lochmann collected the puppies and took them to her Jeep, before setting up a trap. The mother dog was too scared to look at the trap so she ran.

“We never want to leave mom behind,” Lochmann said. “So I went back a few more times hoping that she would still be in that area.”

Lochmann visited the house twice but was unsuccessful in finding the mama dog. Then, on her third visit, she overheard a recognizable bark coming from the house’s first floor.

A fourth tiny puppy was lying at Lochmann’s feet when she ascended the stairs from the basement to the first floor after hearing a tiny whimper.

Lochmann remarked, “I couldn’t believe it. We searched everywhere the day we were there for the original puppies and didn’t see any more anywhere.”

Up until she reached the landing at the top of the stairs, Lochmann wasn’t sure how the puppies were getting into the basement. Lochmann discovered that there was a significant hole in the floorboards, where the puppies seemed to be going.

Lochmann had four more puppies waiting on the 1st floor.

“Altogether there were a total of eight puppies including the three we found the first day,” according to Lochmann.

Before going back inside to look for the puppies’ mother, Lochmann made sure all the puppies were secure in her Jeep. She then placed a trap in the house and waited for Mom to inspect.

Lochmann later found the mother dog safely trapped when he returned inside to check on her.

“That day, we got eight puppies total and their mama off the streets,” Lochmann said.

Lochmann brought Windy Day, Windy Day’s mother, and her puppies with him to the shelter.

Following Lochmann’s placement of the first three puppies into foster care, the remaining five puppies quickly found foster homes. Windy Day, the mother of the puppies, is still searching for a family that will love and take her in.

“I’m hoping that somebody will take her soon,” Lochmann said. “She’s super sweet.”

Windy Day was listed on the Stray Rescue of St. Louis website to be placed with a loving family. The loving mother dog is currently spending as much time as possible with the shelter staff, who are happy that she’ll never have to experience loneliness or fear again.
