Late ‘Harry Potter’ actor Alan Rickman’s journal unveils his reason to play Severus Snape

The Guardian has recently published a few excerpts from Alan Rickman’s diaries that offers the audience a glimpse into his journey with the Harry Potter franchise and his decision to portray Severus in the eight movies.

Rickman was diagnosed in 2005 with a very aggressive form of prostate carcinoma. This occurred just before Rickman began filming. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The doctors decided to remove his entire prostate after a year of treatment. The procedure was performed in Nashville at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on January 6, 2006.

He decided to write about the journey he had and why he decided to stay with the character after he was discharged. “Finally, yes to HP 5. It is not up or down. The argument that wins is the one that says: ‘See it through. It’s your story,’” he wrote.

A year later, in 2007, he spoke about his character’s demise, which is portrayed in J.K. Rowling’s final entry in the book series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He wrote, “… I have finished reading the last ‘Harry Potter’ book,” he wrote at the time. “Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus. This was a true rite of passage. One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – gave me a cliff edge to hang on to.”

He also mentions that after his meeting with Rowling, he became her confidant in the history of Snape’s character. In 2000, Rickman wrote, “She nervously lets me in on a few glimpses of Snape’s background. Talking to her is talking to someone who lives these stories, not invents them.”

The exit from the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s StoneIn addition to his premiere, he also wrote his first journal entry on the franchise. “The film should only be seen on a big screen,” Rickman wrote. “It acquires a scale and depth that matches the hideous score by John Williams. Party afterwards at the Savoy is much more fun.”

In June VarietyReports the publication of Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman, a collection of Rickman’s handwritten diaries, by Henry Holt and Company, in October.

Rickman became a star following his role as Hans Gruber in 1988’s Die HardSince then, he’s worked on many classic films, including Truly, Madly, Deeply, Galaxy Quest, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Love Actually Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. He was best known for his role as Professor Severus snape. Rickman, a London-based actor, died in 2016 after he lost his battle against pancreatic cancer.
