EDMONTON — Jack Campbell is as quick with a quip as he is to whip his glove to snare an opponent’s shot. So, when Campbell is asked about how he and his fiancee, Ashley Sonnenberg, have two cats and a dog at home, he didn’t miss a beat.
“I’m like Ace Ventura,” he said, laughing.
Campbell, Oilers’Key offseason addition and No. 1 goaltender, may not be a pet detective like the titular film he’s referencing, which stars Jim Carrey. However, he’s a wild card.
Campbell might be the ultimate X-factor for the Oilers as they try to build off their Western Conference finals appearance — but he aims to not let the pressure impact his personality.
“I’m competitive, but I think I get the most out of myself when I’m just enjoying life,” he said. “So, I’m always smiling and having fun.”
The Defenceman Tyson Barrie, Campbell’s former teammate in Toronto and now nearby neighbour, can’t wait to see him at the rink every day. It’s a treat to see him quoting comedy movies, doing stand-up routines or belting karaoke tunes — no one is willing to reveal which songs, though.
“He’s all about having laughs and making the most out of every day,” Barrie said. “We’re lucky to have him in our room. He’s a lot of fun to be around.
