Aaron Nola, Justin Verlander, and Justin Verlander were the aces in their respective stats when they entered the night. But, they looked anything but. They combined for 10 earned runs, 12 hits, and four walks over 9.1 innings.

Tucker’s solo home run in the second inning was the first run of the game. The Astros were on the corners with one out soon after and Martin Maldonado gave Houston the 2-0 lead with an RBI double on a well-executed hit-and-run. They were in the same spot an inning later, but they didn’t need more small ball. Tucker instead went deep, giving the Stros a 5-0 lead.

Verlander retired 10 of the first 10 batters he faced. The Astros offense allowed him plenty of room to make mistakes, but his night quickly turned sour. He allowed three runs in the fourth inning on back-toback two-out hits from Castellanos (and Alec Bohm, who drove in two more with a double) The Phillies had their first two batters out, and Realmuto brought them in with a double to tie it. Verlander has a 6.07 ERA over eight World Series starts dating back to 2006.

The Phillies are on a magic carpet and don’t intend to get off anytime soon.
