Inside Phillies-Braves game 1: How the Phillies won in Atlanta with 3 inning-ending pitch

ATLANTA — For two days, the PhilliesThey could not imagine a life without their trusted reliefrs. They knew. David Robertson’s right calf injury, suffered when he jumped to celebrate Bryce Harper’s home runIn Game 2, he was so serious that he had to be sent back to Philadelphia to receive an injection. He wasn’t going to pitch in the Division Series.

The daily path to 27 was murkier.

Then, the Phillies scored seven runs in the first five innings of Tuesday’s 7-6 win over the mighty Braves. The journey should have been simpler.

It is not easy, but these are the Phillies. They are undefeated and unterred, just three games into the postseason.

“They got way too many base runners for us to be comfortable,” catcher J.T. Realmuto said. “But the guys made pitches when they had to. They got out of some huge spots.”

Six pitchers were needed by the Phillies. Beat St. LouisIn two games, they knew they would need more for a best-of-5 series with the Braves. This meant that they had to dig deeper into the bullpen. In Game 1, the relievers had 17 hits Tuesday.

“Somebody in that group, somebody’s going to step up,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said beforehand. “Or a couple of them, for sure.
