Indexes end higher after Sharply Paring Gains

  • After a volatile trading session, US stocks closed higher on Tuesday.
  • Strong earnings reports from Goldman Sachs and Johnson & Johnson helped fuel early bullishness.
  • The earnings season will continue Wednesday, highlighted in Tesla’s quarterly reports.

The US stock market ended Tuesday higher after major indexes lost significant early gains in volatile trading.

The Dow opened 600 points higher than it closed, but the Nasdaq ended up just 1%. It started 2.7% higher than its closing price and closed down with less than half of that. The rally was still a significant advance on Monday.

Strong earnings reports from Goldman Sachs and Johnson & Johnson helped boost investor confidence despite worries of more rate hikes from the central bank to combat inflation.

After the close, earnings season continues, with Netflix reporting. Tesla will also report its third quarter earnings on Wednesday.

Here’s the position of US indexes at Tuesday’s closing bell at 4:30 p.m.
