Independent review into the Indonesia stadium tragedy claims Rules and Standards ignored for years

An independent review into the Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster, Which saw 132 people lose the fight for their lives, has claimed the league’s stakeholders are unprofessional and do not understand their duties.

After the October 1 tragedy, Friday’s report stated that many rules and standards were ignored and that responsibilities had been transferred from one party to the other for several years.

After 132 deaths, 96 injuries and 484 moderate injuries during the match between Arema & Persebaya, the Joint Independent Fact Finding Team (TGIPF), submitted its report to Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo.

TGIPF says that Indonesia’s National Police has deposed a number of officers since the disaster. TGIPF however, claims that the police in Indonesia and the Indonesian National Armed Forces have used excessive actions (e.g. firing tear gas at witnesses) outside their control.

A stadium manager was also criticised for failing to ensure that all doors were open for fans to exit when they needed.

TGIPF called for a police investigation into the provocation of supporters who entered the stadium, set fire to cars and destroyed cars.

The league needs more transparency and accountability, while the relevant staff need training.
